Abstract

The article discusses the author's experience of visiting the Nu, one of the minority groups in China. He mentioned that the Nu people, who are around 27,000, live in the steep mountains of Yunnan and cultivate corn as their crop for livelihood. He noted that the Nu use poison arrows for self-defense against onslaughts of the larger minority groups, such as the Bai. He observed that the Nu opt to raise only one child since they are given government subsidy of 1,000 yuan at birth and 160 yuan every year as the child grows up. He emphasized that the Nu realize the value of good education by letting their children attend school. He said that technology has reached their community in the form of televisions and VCD players as educational aids.
