Abstract

The article offers a look at the salinity in the Murray-Darling Basin in Canberra, a part of Australian Capital Territory. The audit of salinity in the Basin provided the basis for drafting a Basin Salinity Management Strategy by the Ministerial Council. According to the report, the Murray-Darling Basin's geographical and climatic conditions are making it pervasive with regards to salt accumulation. The Salinity Audit further reports that if no prevention steps are taken then the condition is going to get worse with the time. The reports also portrays that buildings, public infrastructure, water streams, soil and crops are equally getting damaged by the salinity in the basin. One of the major findings of the report is that salt in the basin is not reaching to seas by rivers; instead it is getting deposited on the landscapes. The report further provides a framework for the management strategy formulation. In this context the article provides an overview of the Draft Basin initiatives and strategy steps taken by the area government.
