Abstract

An essay from the book "Cultural Identities in Canadian Literature" is presented. It explores the history of Gaels coming to Canada. Emigration to Canada of Gaels was the result of centuries of invasion, alienation, forced removal and famine, especially in the late eighteenth-century. In the nineteenth century, these Gaelic-Canadians embraced romanticisms. They are constantly divided by involvement with a new twentieth-century colonial culture. And with the passage into the twenty-first century, they are faced with challenges to navigate still more challenges to their identity, culture and language.
