Abstract

The article focuses on Gary Auerbach, a chiropractor who turned to photography after a wrist injury. He researched how one could make a permanent photograph and then he discovered the platinum printmaking method. This method of printing is one of the oldest and most permanent of all photography processes. It is also one of the most demanding processes, requiring precise exposures using a bulky large format camera followed by contact printing. With highly stable platinum taking the place of silver in the emulsion, images captured by the negatives can last 500 to 1,000 years.
