Abstract

This chapter of the book Contextualizing Transition: Interviews with Contemporary Russian Writers & Critics presents an interview with critic Viacheslav Kuritsyn about Russian literature in the 1990s. Kuritsyn believed that the direction of Russian authors is a suspect idea because it stresses a certain kosherness. But he emphasized the creation of openly entertaining and popular texts for the masses. The author added that young people are completely free of inhibitions. For them it is natural that books must be sold. Kuritsyn also discussed the role of criticism in establishing a connection between writers and readers.
