Abstract

The article examines the role of Iraq as a base for a new generation of jihadists, trained in urban warfare, who are taking their battle abroad. Iraq has a strategic position in the heart of the Middle East. The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, ordered Iraqi suicide bombers to target hotel guests and wedding parties in Amman, Jordan. U.S. officials fear that a global underground of financiers that once aided Al Qaeda in Afghanistan is now supporting the Iraqi insurgency. As Zarqawi became increasingly successful in Iraq, he publicly appealed to Osama bin Laden for support.
