Abstract
- The article profiles poet and novelist Jean Ingelow. She began her writing career on the back of her room's white window shutters because her mother thought poetry was frivolous and would not provide her with writing paper. Following the discovery of the verses her mother relented and encouraged her poetry writing. Her first poems were printed in a little paper published weekly by her brother and his fellow pupils at Saint Stephen's School. In 1860, at her own expense, she published a collection of children's short stories, Tales of Orris, originally written for Youth magazine.
