Abstract
- This article presents a biography of George MacDonald Fraser. His historical novels deal with border feuds, bare-knuckle boxing in the time of the Regency and the Edwardian England through the eyes of an expatriate American. There were also volumes of short stories derived from his war service as junior officer in a highland regiment. His main project has been the dozen novels known collectively as The Flashman Papers. Flashman was the bully in Thomas HUGHES's Tom Brown's Schooldays. Inventing Flashman's military career after his expulsion from Rugby School, Fraser creates a memorable antihero, a handsome, womanizing coward with the knack of evading danger and emerging from his many adventures with undeserved glory.
