Abstract
- The article discusses feminist theories and practices of human rights in North America. The increase in discourses of human rights or women's human rights is no different. These discourses are adapted and transformed in the very process of their contested diffusion and their always local reception and implementation. The author suggests that the complicated struggles over North American feminism's apparently global pretensions in this domain can be illuminated by a consideration of earlier feminist struggles over difference, encounters on the terrain of identity.
