Abstract

This article reports that the growth of the Big Apple's restaurant business hinges on more than a bunch of hotshots with too much money on their hands. It's often about friendships, Louis Bratsis is partners with a childhood friend, or simply a love of fine food and wine. In fact, making an investment is sometimes driven more by the heart than by ruthless practicality. Entrepreneur Seth Harrison, for one, readily admits that no one he knows thinks investing in a restaurant is a good idea. Harrison, a venture capitalist, is one of 11 investors in Tocqueville Restaurant, which has embarked on a multimillion-dollar expansion in a new location that will double the size of the five-year-old business.
