Abstract
- This article examines a revised plan approved in May 1997 by regional forester Phil Janik for the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. On May 23, 1997, Janik signed the Record of Decision approving a revised plan for the Tongass, ending a ten-year, contentious process for managing the nation's largest national forest. The plan is a blueprint for how the U.S. Forest Service will manage the Tongass for the next ten years or so. Although many factors influence the people and resources of Southeast Alaska, the Tongass Land Management Plan is an important document charting the region's future.
