Abstract

This article reports that conservatives from across the U.S. have flooded the office of Senator Mary Landrieu, with calls over the last several days in an attempt to tie up her phone system. The callers, virtually all of whom came from outside the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina, were upset with Landrieu after she remarked on the television network ABC's "This Week" program on September 4 that she might have to "punch" President George W. Bush if he criticized local officials again for their handling of the Katrina disaster. Over the last week, dozens of Senate aides have volunteered to work the phones in Landrieu's office to help handle the deluge of calls from constituents calling for assistance in everything from being rescued from roof tops to tracking down lost family members.
