The KDOQI guideline structures the selection and timing of dialysis access, ensuring each patient's medical circumstances and preferences are taken into account. The preparation of a dialysis patient should also include discussion with the patient in regard to their values and expectations before coming to a life-long plan for the patient. This holistic approach aims to achieve reliable and functioning access while preserving future options and improving patient outcomes.
