Abstract

Researchers at University Hospital Saarlandes have reported new findings on complications following arcuate and radial keratotomies (AK/RK), including epithelial invasion. A study of patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty after AK/RK treatment revealed that 22% showed epithelial invasion, with varying invasion patterns and depths. The research suggests that the biomechanical instability associated with epithelial invasion should be considered in trauma cases, cataract surgery, or keratoplasty, especially for less experienced surgeons. The study highlights the importance of non-mechanical contact-free excimer laser trephination in keratoplasty procedures. [Extracted from the article]
