Abstract

In a survey of 104 US infectious disease specialists, 88% reported working in facilities that allow animal-assisted activities or pet visitation. Variability existed in the species of animals allowed, restricted areas, and veterinary assessments, demonstrating a need to standardize infection prevention approaches across health care facilities to mitigate potential risks. • 88% of respondents reported working in facilities allowing animal assisted activities. • The survey showed significant variability in infection prevention practices. • Highest variability observed in locations, animal species and health assessments. • We suggest practical steps with the goal of standardizing infection prevention practices.
