Abstract

The University of Texas Medical Branch conducted a study on opioid prescribing trends following thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy before and after the 2021 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines. The research found that there was an immediate decrease in opioid prescriptions for thyroid surgery after the guideline change, but the change was not sustained over time. However, there was a gradual decrease in opioid prescriptions for parathyroidectomy over time. This study provides valuable insights into the impact of prescription guidelines on opioid prescribing trends in surgical procedures. [Extracted from the article]
