Abstract
- The article discusses a study on iron deposition in the spinal cord of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and its relation to neurodegeneration. The research found that iron accumulates in microglia-macrophages, astrocytes, and axons in non-lesional areas of the spinal cord in MS patients, leading to oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. Despite the absence of iron-rimmed lesions in the spinal cord, the study suggests that aberrant iron distribution is a significant feature of MS spinal cord pathology, impacting motoric disability in progressive MS. The findings highlight the importance of understanding iron metabolism in MS pathology. [Extracted from the article]
