Abstract
- The article discusses Lyme borreliosis, the most common tick-borne infectious disease in Europe, with up to 70,000 new cases estimated each year in Austria. Researchers at MedUni Vienna have made progress in understanding the infection mechanism and potential targeted therapies that do not rely on antibiotics. The study focuses on the restriction-modification system (RMS) of Borrelia bacteria, offering a new approach for developing therapies against Lyme borreliosis. This research could lead to reducing reliance on antibiotics and preventing antibiotic resistance, with phage therapy being considered as an alternative treatment method. [Extracted from the article]
