Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Chile focused on assessing the professional empowerment of midwives in selected Latin American countries. The study utilized the Perceptions Midwifery Empowerment Scale (PEMS) and included responses from 1127 midwives with varying backgrounds. Findings indicated that midwives in management roles felt more empowered compared to those in other areas, and continuous education and postgraduate studies were associated with higher levels of empowerment. The study suggested that midwifery programs in Latin American countries should prioritize professional empowerment, particularly in hospital settings where empowerment levels were lower.
