ARMY DEPLOYS TO ALASKA ISLAND AMID RISE IN RUSSIAN MILITARY ACTIVITY.

The article reports on the deployment of about 130 U.S. soldiers to Shemya Island in western Alaska in response to an increase in Russian military planes and navy vessels approaching American territory in mid-September 2024. The increase was detected as Russia and China conducted joint military drills in the Pacific and Arctic oceans. Two High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems were sent along with the soldiers to the island, where the U.S. Air Force maintains an air station.
