Abstract

A recent study conducted by the University of Cantabria in Spain examined the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in patients with HIV. The study found that HIV-infected patients are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The researchers used multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) to assess cardiovascular risk in asymptomatic patients with subclinical atherosclerosis. After six years of follow-up, the study observed an increase in cardiovascular risk factors such as coronary artery calcification, carotid plaques, and overall cardiovascular risk scores. The findings suggest that MDCT, along with other clinical and laboratory parameters, could be an important marker for assessing cardiovascular disease progression in HIV patients with low cardiovascular risk.
