Abstract

Researchers at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology in Moscow conducted a study to determine the role of genetic factors, specifically Toll-like receptors (TLR), in the susceptibility of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in individuals infected with HIV. The study involved 317 patients with HIV, divided into two groups: 63 with LTBI and 274 without LTBI. The researchers found no significant differences in TLR gene expression levels between the two groups, and no significant association between TLR gene polymorphisms and LTBI susceptibility. However, they did observe that patients with certain TLR genotypes had lower CD4 T-cell counts. The study concluded that LTBI does not significantly affect TLR gene expression levels in HIV-infected individuals. [Extracted from the article]
