Abstract

A recent study conducted by the University of New Haven has found evidence that Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium responsible for Lyme disease, can form biofilms in the heart tissues of infected mice. These biofilms contribute to severe inflammation, such as carditis, which is a common manifestation of Lyme disease. The study used various techniques to examine the presence of biofilms and inflammatory markers in the heart tissues, and the results showed that B. burgdorferi spirochetes form aggregates with a known biofilm marker in the mouse heart tissues and induce inflammation. This research suggests that the mouse model is a valuable tool for future studies on B. burgdorferi biofilms. [Extracted from the article]
