Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland in College Park examined the role of type I interferons (IFNs) in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (STm) macrophage infections. The study found that STm infection inhibits IFN beta signaling in murine macrophages, but does not affect IFN gamma signaling. This inhibition is Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-dependent and is mediated by reduced host cell surface IFNAR1. The research concluded that macrophages exposed to STm have reduced IFN beta signaling, but this does not affect the cell-autonomous host defense against STm. [Extracted from the article]
