Abstract
- A new report from Boston Children's Hospital discusses the use of timed topical dexamethasone eye drops to improve mitochondrial function and prevent severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The study found that administering these eye drops prior to peak neovessel formation prevented neovascularization in preterm infants at high risk for ROP. The treatment also suppressed neovascularization in a mouse model of ROP. The researchers suggest that this simple clinical approach could be used to prevent severe ROP. [Extracted from the article]
