Abstract

A recent study conducted at the National Neurosciences Centre in West Bengal, India, focused on primary spinal epidural abscesses (SEA). The study analyzed 11 cases of non-tubercular primary SEA and examined their clinical presentation, MRI findings, blood investigations, bacteriological profile, and outcomes. The majority of cases were caused by Gram-positive bacteria, and comorbidities were common among patients. The study concluded that SEA is a surgical emergency, and antibiotic treatment should continue until postoperative radiological and hematological parameters are satisfactory. Patients with better preoperative neurological status and those with a lumbar location of the abscess tend to have a better recovery. [Extracted from the article]
