Abstract

A recent study conducted at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, United Kingdom, explored the prevalence and content of advance care planning for individuals undergoing lower limb amputation due to peripheral arterial disease or diabetes. The study found that only 40.5% of patients had advance care planning discussions, which primarily focused on resuscitation. The research also revealed that patients who engaged in advance care planning had higher mortality rates and longer hospital stays. The study highlights the need for improved advance care planning for individuals undergoing amputation and suggests that discussions should encompass a broader range of options beyond resuscitation.
