Abstract

A study conducted at Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing, China, examined the effects of short-term proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) on the gut microbiota of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The study found that the use of PPIs may increase the risk of infection by altering the gut microbiota and elevating arachidonic acid metabolism, which can produce proinflammatory mediators. The researchers recommend caution when prescribing acid-suppressant drugs, especially PPIs, to ACS patients at low-to-medium risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. The study was a single-blind, multicenter, randomized controlled trial. [Extracted from the article]
