Abstract

Researchers at the University of Patras in Greece have developed a mathematical model to study the nutrient distribution of avascular cancer tumors within an inhomogeneous environment. The model considers a cancerous cell colony as a continuous two-phase fluid with five bounded compartments, governed by mass conservation, Fick's diffusion law, and fluid mechanics principles. The study focuses on an oblate spheroidal tumor and investigates the effects of non-homogeneity in nutrient supply and consumption rates. The findings suggest that critical nutrient values are encountered within the interior of a thin layer, rather than at a single interface. The research has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Engineering Mathematics. [Extracted from the article]
