Abstract

Mpox caught the attention of the general public following the global outbreak of clade IIb disease that began in 2022. This outbreak, predominantly due to human-to-human transmission of clade IIb infection, with a high proportion of cases occurring in men who have sex with men, led to the World Health Organization (WHO) classifying it as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) from July 2022 to May 2023. A second PHEIC due to mpox was declared in August 2024 due to the increased spread of clade Ib disease in Africa, again related to an increase in cases due to sexual transmission.
