Abstract

A study conducted at the University of Alexandria in Egypt explored the effects of isotretinoin treatment on patients with acne vulgaris. The researchers found that isotretinoin treatment increased the expression of the transcription factor p53 in the skin and sebaceous glands of patients. This upregulation of p53 was associated with changes in gene expression related to the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. The study suggests that increased p53-FoxO1 signaling caused by isotretinoin treatment may explain both the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of the drug. [Extracted from the article]
