Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Shandong University in Jinan, China, examined the hemodynamic behavior of umbrella-shaped inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) using computational fluid dynamics. The study found that all five IVCFs analyzed exhibited prothrombotic stagnation zones downstream of the filter head, which could potentially lead to life-threatening conditions such as IVC lesions, filter rupture, and displacement. The researchers also observed that alterations in the morphology of the filter wires significantly impacted the flow resistance of the filter and the distribution pattern of wall shear stress on the IVC. This research provides valuable insights into the hemodynamic characteristics of umbrella-shaped IVCFs and highlights the importance of considering these factors in clinical practice.
