Abstract

A recent study conducted at the Mayo Clinic analyzed the changes in hyoid bone position with aging and its impact on neck contour changes. The researchers used 3D volumetric reconstruction of 282 neck computed tomography scans and categorized the cohort into three age groups. They found that as individuals age, the hyoid bone descends in both sexes, and an increase in body mass index (BMI) is associated with forward movement. However, hyoid horizontal distance was not affected by age and sex, but rather by BMI. Further studies are needed to assess the correlation of hyoid position between upright and supine positions.
