Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia investigated the influence of different labels for neck pain after a motor vehicle crash (MVC) on recovery expectations and management beliefs. The study involved 2,229 participants who were randomized to read scenarios describing a patient with neck pain labeled as whiplash injury, whiplash-associated disorder, post-traumatic neck pain, neck pain, or neck strain. The results showed that the labels for neck pain influenced recovery expectations and management preferences, with participants assigned to whiplash-associated disorder or neck pain having lower recovery expectations compared to those assigned to neck strain. However, the clinical relevance of these effects was unclear. [Extracted from the article]
