Abstract
- A preprint abstract from biorxiv.org discusses the proportion and distribution of neurotransmitter-defined cell types in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) of the brain. While previous studies have focused on dopamine neurons and their role in motivation, learning, movement, and addiction, this research highlights the presence of other cell types that release GABA, glutamate, or a combination of neurotransmitters. The study used fluorescent in situ hybridization in male and female mice to label neurons expressing mRNA for dopamine, GABA, or glutamate transporters. The findings reveal a diverse landscape of neurotransmitter-defined cell types in the VTA and SNc, challenging previous assumptions. [Extracted from the article]
