Abstract
- A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) discusses the findings of a study on avian influenza (bird flu). The study focused on dendritic cells, which are important components of the immune system, and their response to infection with high and low pathogenic avian influenza viruses. The researchers observed a strong proinflammatory response and morphological changes in the dendritic cells, which eventually led to cell death. The study concluded that both high and low pathogenic avian influenza viruses are capable of infecting and replicating in dendritic cells, and the dysregulated immune response seen with high pathogenic avian influenza infections may contribute to the severity of the disease.
