Abstract

A recent study conducted by Teeside University in Rwanda has found a significant link between periodontitis (gum disease) and preterm deliveries. The study revealed that pregnant women in Rwanda have a high prevalence of periodontitis (60%) and that nurses working in antenatal clinics have insufficient knowledge about gum disease. The researchers recommend incorporating basic periodontal screening into existing antenatal care packages, along with nurse training and public awareness campaigns, to improve pregnancy outcomes and oral health. This policy brief aims to inform decision-making and contribute to a healthier future generation in Rwanda. [Extracted from the article]
