Abstract

A recent study conducted at the Ottawa Hospital in Canada compared the outcomes and patient satisfaction of two different approaches to managing the contralateral breast in patients with unilateral breast cancer. The study included 249 patients, with 37% undergoing contralateral prophylactic mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (PMIBR) and 63% undergoing symmetrization techniques. The study found that both approaches had similar rates of major complications and overall satisfaction, except for a decrease in physical well-being of the chest in the symmetrization group. The researchers concluded that symmetrization may provide comparable outcomes to PMIBR in patients without specific indications. [Extracted from the article]
