Abstract

A recent report from researchers at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China discusses the potential of Berbamine Hydrochloride (Ber) as an inhibitor of autophagy in lung carcinoma cells. The study found that Ber blocked the late stage of autophagic flux, enhancing the killing effect of chemotherapy agents. The researchers also discovered that Ber inhibited lysosomal acidification by activating Nox2, a key enzyme involved in neutralizing protons in the lysosomal lumen. The combination of Ber and cisplatin showed a synergistic killing effect on lung carcinoma cells, and this effect was confirmed in an in vivo xenograft mouse model. The study suggests that Ber may be a promising adjuvant for enhancing the cancer cell killing effect of chemotherapy by inhibiting autophagy. [Extracted from the article]
