Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Coimbra in Portugal explores the role of brain endothelial cell (BEC) senescence in the dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) during aging. The study suggests that the transition from a young to an aged BBB is mediated, at least in part, by BEC senescence. Aged BECs exhibit higher expression of senescent markers and impaired occludin expression, which affects BBB function. The findings contribute to a better understanding of BBB dysfunction in aging.
