Abstract

A study conducted at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, has found that avian influenza A viruses with pandemic potential are highly susceptible to antiviral medications. The researchers screened over 20,000 protein sequences of various influenza viruses and found that the frequencies of substitutions associated with reduced inhibition by antivirals were low. The study also identified novel markers of resistance to existing antiviral interventions. These findings suggest that current antiviral medications are effective against avian influenza A viruses and provide valuable information for monitoring and preventing outbreaks.
