Abstract

Researchers at the University of Coimbra in Portugal have conducted a study on the biomechanical properties of the lens in age-related cataracts, which is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. The study used a modified animal model to create different severities of nuclear cataracts and measured the hardness and elasticity of the lens. The results showed significant differences in the lens properties between healthy and cataractous lenses, as well as between different degrees of cataract severity. This study provides valuable insights into the understanding of cataract formation and its impact on the lens. [Extracted from the article]
