Abstract

A patent application has been filed for a portable, ex vivo, normothermic limb perfusion machine. The machine is designed to extend the storage life of detached biological tissues, such as amputated limbs, that need to be transplanted or replanted. It maintains a normothermic environment for the tissue by pumping a perfusate through it, and includes detection devices to measure metabolic and physiological parameters. The machine can adjust the perfusion process to maintain these parameters within predetermined thresholds and alert the user if they are outside the thresholds. This technology could improve the success of limb replantation and transplantation procedures. [Extracted from the article]
