Abstract

This article explores the need for a new vision for public education in the United States, arguing that the current neoliberal paradigm has not been successful. The authors propose reframing education to focus on preparing young people to be active citizens and improving democratic health. They discuss the cracks in the neoliberal paradigm and the threats to democracy that have emerged, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The article suggests five guiding principles for a more democratic educational experience and emphasizes the importance of generating new ideas and competing education frames. It also highlights the need for research into practical solutions and calls for collaboration among education stakeholders. The article concludes by emphasizing the cultivation of human qualities for thriving and the role of public schools in fostering democratic values. [Extracted from the article]
