Abstract

Christian rapper Aaron Cole will be performing at Gardner-Webb University's "Summer in the Springs" series on August 24. The concert is open to both GWU students and the general public, with free tickets available for students and a $15 fee for others. Aaron Cole, a Dove Award-winning artist, is known for his rap skills and chart-topping success. In other news, breaking, a form of street dance, will be introduced as a sporting event in the Paris Olympics. While Olympic organizers are promoting the popularity of street dance in France, some members of the local breaking scene are skeptical about the subculture being co-opted and commercialized. There are concerns that the essence of breaking, which is rooted in local communities and born out of racial and economic inequality, will be diluted on the global stage. This tension between mainstream institutions and hip-hop culture is not new, and the inclusion of breaking in the Olympics is seen as the latest chapter in this ongoing struggle.
