Abstract

Researchers at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom have developed a biosynthetic membrane called Symatix that can be used as an alternative to human amniotic membrane (hAM) in ocular surface surgery. The study found that the biosynthetic membrane demonstrated biocompatibility with human limbus-derived epithelial cells and had physical and biological properties similar to hAM. The biosynthetic membrane showed promise in terms of cell migration, proliferation, and tight junction formation, making it a potential substitute for hAM in sight-restoring operations. The research was supported by a grant from the United Kingdom Research and Innovation. [Extracted from the article]
