Abstract

New research conducted at the University of Porto in Portugal has focused on the therapeutic applications of potassium iodide, particularly its role in shielding the thyroid during radiation emergencies. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as well as concerns about nuclear weapons, have led to a surge in demand for potassium iodide across Europe. The research reviews the current knowledge on the pharmacology, physiology, adverse effects, and protective role of potassium iodide in reducing the risk of thyroid cancer during radiation emergencies. It concludes that while potassium iodide protects the thyroid from radioiodine, it does not affect the absorption of other radioactive materials or defend against external radiation exposure.
