Researchers at Nanyang Institute of Technology in China have published new data on Alcaligenes faecalis, a type of bacteria involved in the treatment of high ammonia nitrogen wastewater. The study isolated 25 strains of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria from a landfill leachate biochemical treatment system. Two strains, Bacillus subtilis F4 and Alcaligenes faecalis P4, showed good tolerance to ammonia nitrogen concentrations and demonstrated high removal rates of ammonia nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand. The study also detected specific genes related to nitrogen metabolism in both strains.
