Abstract
- Laura Engelstein's book, "The Resistible Rise of Antisemitism: Exemplary Cases from Russia, Ukraine, and Poland," explores the complexities of antisemitism through three case studies. Rather than offering grand theories, Engelstein focuses on specific examples to examine the role of Jews and attitudes towards them. She highlights how antisemitism interacts with other attitudes towards Jews, and how Jews themselves were capable of offering their own defense. The book provides important insights into the study of antisemitism and Jewish life in Poland, Ukraine, and Russia, but readers may question how these cases fit into the broader story of the rise of European antisemitism.
