Abstract
- Fleischer's Auctions in Columbus, Ohio recently held an auction featuring over 500 historical items, including a collection of personal effects belonging to Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. The collection, which had never been offered for sale before, included Sherman's wartime sword, uniform insignia, family Bible, and a copy of George N. Barnard's Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. The auction generated over $2 million in prices realized, with a sell-through rate of over 95%. The auction also included items related to the history of slavery in Charleston, South Carolina, such as rare Charleston free badges and slave badges, as well as photographs of an enslaved drummer boy and a hand-painted Civil War cavalry regimental flag. The auction also featured an archive of General Rufus Ingalls, as well as items related to General Robert E. Lee. [Extracted from the article]
